Salary Range: $70,000 - $80,000 annually. Wages commensurate with experience.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Employees in this job complete and oversee a variety of professional engineering assignments in one or more specialized areas of transportation systems and programs involving research, planning, design, technology, materials, construction, traffic safety, traffic operations, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and highways.

 

Title - Project Engineer

This professional engineering position is required to have ten or more years of experience, post college. The employee performs a full range of professional civil engineering assignments in a full-functioning capacity. Considerable independent judgement is required to carry out assignments that have significant impact on services or programs. Guidelines may be available but require adaptation or interpretation to determine appropriate courses of action.

 

JOB DUTIES

Compiles and analyzes engineering data and prepares conclusions and recommendations.

Designs and prepares preliminary and final plans for highways, bridges, drainage structures, municipal utilities, roadway lighting, traffic control devices, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and miscellaneous highway facilities.

 

May oversee the survey, staking, layout and inspection of construction projects. Participates in studies to determine sufficiency of existing roadway systems and structures, as well as programming of future construction.  Develops preliminary engineering treatments to determine construction feasibility and estimated costs. Investigates traffic problems and recommends methods to improve traffic flow and safety.  Meets with representatives of private industry, local organizations, and citizens to discuss proposed roadway construction activity.  Recommends construction methods best suited to soil types encountered.  Prepares final construction documents for bidding.  May serve as quality assurance engineer reviewing plans, testing or construction for roadway projects.

  • Site and Infrastructure Design
  • Construction Engineering and Inspection
  • Transportation Planning (Long-range Transportation Planning Development)
    • i.e. Traffic modeling, access management studies, and corridor studies
  • Traffic Engineering
    • i.e. Traffic counts, traffic impact studies, and traffic accident and safety studies
  • Traffic Signing Plans
  • Road Safety Audits
  • Pedestrian and Non-motorized facility design
  • Working with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Road Inventory Field Data System (RIFDS)

 

Requirements

  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited college and hold a PE licensed in the State of Michigan
  • 10 years of related experience in traffic engineering, road safety audits, and transportation planning.
  • Experience in Site Planning and design of infrastructure is also preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated maturity in judgment, initiative and ethics.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare detailed reports.
  • Ability to travel overnight for field assignments for a week or more at a time.
  • Computer skills including Office 365, Carlson, MicroStation, and/or AutoCAD.
